I Quit!!

Okay, I confess...I smoke.

I have chronic tonsillitis and with no health insurance I am having trouble getting any help. I have been suffering for 5 years with it. Monday I am going to go back to the Clinic and again see if they will help me. Last time I went they said if I had throat cancer I could get help. I am frustrated and tired of being in pain.

So, after 33 years of smoking I am going to quit, cold turkey. It scares the crap out of me! It is snowing hard today, but I am going to take a walk to the store and buy a bag of hard candies.

If anyone has any helpful hints, I am open to hearing them!

I am so proud of you! My husband quit a little over a year ago after 40 years. He has been successful and says to avoid places or routines that you are used to smoking. My daughter says try toothpicks. Wishing you all the best!

Thanks you guys! I bought some jolly ranchers. I am so scared! LOL Julie, it helps to know after so long long your husband conquered it.

I am not a slave to the tobacco companies! : )

The first three days are the toughest--after that it takes seven days to get all of the nicotine out of your system. After that, it's psychological and it typically takes 30 days to break (or create) a habit. These are good milestones to remember. :-)

Analyze when your most "important" cigarettes are each day and have an alternative behavior ready to replace them. Be prepared because these are the times that you will be most tempted!

If you normally drink coffee and have a cigarette, switch to tea. Or if you drink tea, switch to a completely different flavor. I still can't have my tea with milk without immediately wanting a cigarette. I switched to green tea and have accepted it as a lifestyle change.

Smoking is as emotional of a habit as it is physical--get that smoking cessation assistance number from your doc and call for the booklet. Very helpful for analyzing your personal quirks with smoking. This will give you the power to keep going long term and learn to avoid the common pitfalls. Know your weaknesses and be ready to deal with them.

Take a huge, deep breath every morning and pay attention to how much more air your lungs can hold. It's truly miraculous to observe how quickly this happens. Within six months, your lungs will be pretty and pink again.

Good luck!!!!! This week will be the toughest, but you can do it!!!!

Wow, I can't beleive how in tune I am with you! My husband and I just quit a little over 2 weeks ago, we too are long time smokers.
This is the 4th time we have quit, and the reason is the new prices.
Tips - 1.)Put the money away that you spent everyday and watch it grow. Imagine burning that money -that's what us smokers do.
2.) Think of a phrase that helps you by the cravings and repeat it everytime the cravings come - mine is "This will pass."
3.)When the cravings come,go to a place where you can't smoke.
Duck into a store, take a nap, wash dishes. 4.)Stay away from other smokers, when they are smoking. Soon they will smell bad to you. This is how we smelt! 5.) Do not smoke that first cigarette!!!! You tend to feel like you have the addiction licked, so one is not going to hurt you. Even one puff leads back to smoking. Trust me, I know!
Sorry, this is suppose to be a comment, not a blog! Convo me if you think I can help!

Thanks for the help! It is so hard, my veins are crawling! Every thought today is about "just one puff...no, yes, no!"
